A carry-on bag odour prompted an American Airlines aircraft to stop in Florida.

Five passengers on the Barbados-bound aeroplane were hospitalised.A "chemical stench" from a passenger's carry-on luggage caused an

American Airlines aircraft to Barbados to return to Florida, authorities said.
Flight 338 left Miami International Airport on Wednesday and returned at 9 p.m.

A customer's carry-on baggage generated a chemical stench in the cabin, an airline spokeswoman told Insider.

"The plane landed safely and passengers deplaned using air steps and were bussed to the terminal," a spokeswoman said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reacted as the jet landed.

A fire department official said HazMat crews assessed the jet after complaints of a strong chemical smell.

American Airlines and the fire department said five crew members were hospitalised "out of an abundance of caution" after the plane was evacuated.
