According to two individuals familiar with the negotiations, the Carolina Panthers decided to sell former all-pro running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday
After playing collegiate football for Stanford, McCaffrey is back in the Bay Area.
Despite being one of the NFL's most versatile and productive running backs when healthy, he has struggled with injuries in recent years. He is currently in his sixth season with the Panthers.
According to one of the sources with knowledge of the trade, the 49ers agreed to send the Panthers second, third, and fourth round picks in 2023 and a fifth round pick in 2024.
Later, without disclosing the details of the deal, the Panthers and 49ers confirmed it. Both teams stated that McCaffrey's passing a physical was a requirement for the transfer.
McCaffrey is expected to join the 49ers on Friday, and he might play for them when they host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
