Lake found on Mars
Water was abundant on Mars, and the planet was dotted with lakes, rivers, oceans, ocean basins, and shimmering deltas.
The low pressure that follows from Mars' lack of a considerable atmosphere renders liquid water on the planet's surface impossible.
The polar caps of Mars contain a large quantity of water, frozen in the form of ice—roughly the same amount as is found in the Greenland ice sheet on Earth.
According to Nature Astronomy, there might be a lake under the polar ice cap of Mars, at least near the south pole.
"The quality of Mars data from satellites and landers is such that we can use it to answer truly tough questions regarding conditions on and beneath the planet's surface,"
Mars' closeness and similarities to Earth make it an interesting topic for astrobiology.
