Black holes wobbling three times a second have proved Einstein right

Gravity-induced orbital precession changes the geometry of an object's orbit over time, as predicted by general relativity.

Black holes produced GW200129, a gravitational wave with three-second precession.

Mark Hannam of Cardiff University, UK, and his colleagues saw a considerably more dramatic effect in a pair of black holes

It's 10 billion times quicker than prior observations, therefore it's Einstein's most severe regime when space and time are stretched and deformed.

The scientists reanalyzed data from three gravitational wave detectors in the US, Italy, and Japan to determine the precession.

The finding has important astrophysical consequences, says Fabio Antonini of Cardiff University.
